Moles

New Zealand has one of the highest melanoma
rates in the world. Over 200 New Zealanders
die from melanoma each year. Over 50,000 skin
cancers are diagnosed in New Zealand each year.

A key to treating melanoma is early detection
before
the cancer spreads deeper and to other
parts of the body.

At Skinsite we offer expert dermoscopic mole checks. This is skin surface microscopy which allows for more detailed and accurate examination than with the naked eye. We recommend a full body mole check which will take approx 20 to 30 minutes as melanoma can occur in places not easily visualised by self-examination. Moles are then scanned and stored digitally for future reference if necessary. This is SDDI, or serial digital dermoscopic imaging. The patient is then placed on a surveillance program being recalled at appropriate intervals. Total body photography can also beperformed to track the development of new or changing moles.

Unlike other clinics, our checks are performed by doctors so you will have a likely diagnosis immediately without having to wait for a report from a diagnosing doctor off site. Also, if appropriate, we can provide treatment including cryotherapy or surgical removal of moles if appropriate. All suspicious moles are sent to the laboratory for further testing. If mole removal would like to be done within the same appointment please let the receptionist know in advance. Our patients have the benefit of knowing that our experience in cosmetic surgical procedures ensures that the greatest care will be taken to achieve the best cosmetic result.

Accuracy of diagnosis depends on the individual experience of the doctors. We are one of the most established clinics in New Zealand providing a dedicated dermoscopic mole check clinic to Aucklanders since 1995. All our doctors are highly skilled and have had training with Dr Tam, a recognised expert in early melanoma detection. We urge patients to treat with caution claims of new technology being better than dermoscopy as the technique that we use is recognised worldwide as being the gold standard for primary care doctors.
